Abstract

The reading of Isabelle Eberhardt’s nouvelles has suggested to us that a queer interpretative approach would effectively explain the author’s evident identification with some male characters, as well as her use of cross-dressing, of a masculine name and identity, and of masculine grammatical gender. This perspective would be also enriched with contributions from gender studies to women’s travel writing and francophone Maghrebi literature. While the author’s exploration of gender identity has already been studied in her diaries and travelogues, her nouvelles have not received the same attention in this regard, a gap that this work aims to bridge.
