The evolution of homoerotic expression in Luis Cernuda's exile poetry

This article studies Luis Cernuda’s poetry from 1936, focusing on the expression of homosexuality and stablishing a comparison with his previous poetry, to reveal the possible changes in the way he treats this main theme in his work. To do so, we analyse first the poet’s attitude towards love and erotism after the Civil War, as well as the new poetic ways he uses to express them. Secondly, we explain the presence of narcissism, linking it with the influence of mysticism and Neoplatonism, to reveal its close connection with homoerotic expression. Finally, we deepen in the issue of the passing of time and aging, and how it affected, vitally and poetically, to the writer.
