Reviewing positions on gender in Catalan from the perspective of Queer and Trans Linguistics

In Catalan, Spanish and other Romance languages, grammatical gender is to a certain extent linked to gender identity, since we use the masculine when we refer to men ("el professorØ està cansatØ"), and the feminine when we refer to women ("la professora està cansada"). The objective of this article is to analyze the position of linguists and normative institutions on the relationship between linguistic and extralinguistic gender, for which we will establish an ad hoc corpus of texts on this topic that we will then critically analyze from the perspective of queer linguistics. After the analysis, we will argue that the challenges to the norm show the need for a change in traditional perspectives.
