Marking the seventieth anniversary of the passing of the Act of 12 May 1956 on land use and urban planning, a milestone in contemporary Spanish urban planning, this issue of Ciudades examines the institutionalisation of urban planning that took place around that time, considering its political and technical context, its international influences, its evolution and current impact, and its resonance in other countries. These diverse perspectives provide a better understanding of that past but also reclaim it as a stimulus to rethink urban planning as an essential public function in today’s complex context.
