Knowledge, power, and pleasure in BDSM

Notes for a practical experience

Abstract

This article analyzes BDSM practices from a philosophical and socio-epistemic perspective, aiming to explore their emancipatory potential and their limitations within the contemporary heterosexual and pharmacopornographic regime. Starting from a Foucauldian conception of power as relational, dynamic, and productive, the text examines how the consensual exchange of power in BDSM can constitute a form of knowledge-pleasure decentered from traditional knowledge-power.

First, it reviews interpretations from the so-called "psychological sciences," especially Lacanian readings of jouissance, highlighting their contributions and limitations in accounting for the diversity of identities, roles, and experiences involved in these practices. Next, it analyzes the performative and fictional nature of BDSM scenes, understood as heterotopic spaces where norms, bodies, and hierarchies can be negotiated, suspended, or resignified.

The article pays particular attention to the decentralization of the body, genitalia, and penetration as axes of sexual pleasure, as well as the eroticization of power as a central element of these dynamics. However, it also points out the risks that BDSM may reproduce structural gender inequalities and reinforce phallocentrism under new symbolic forms, especially when mediated by commercial pornography.

Finally, it concludes that BDSM possesses significant epistemic and political potential for rethinking desire, consent, and the distribution of power, although this potential requires constant critical review to avoid its co-optation by the dominant ideology.
